Somniloquy is a sleeping disorder related with the talking aloud in one’s sleep, sleep talking. Somniloquy occurs at an unconscious level when the person doing so is not aware of the fact that he is doing it. Somniloquy or sleep-talking is a parasomnia which can be quite loud, ranging from simple sounds to long speeches, and can take place many times during sleep. A listener may or may not be capable to understand what the person is saying.
Sleep talking causes are not completely known. Many times, the cause of this sleep talking can not be associated with any identifiable underlying problem or disease.
Sleep talking may be associated with sleep-related disorders, such as:
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Sleep walking
Sleep-related epilepsy
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) behavior disorder (an unusual disorder in which individuals tend to act out their dreams while asleep)
Sleep apnea
Nighttime sleep eating syndrome
